Balvallioch is a charming self-catering holiday cottage situated on Suisgill, a traditional working Highland estate. This comfortable cottage is totally private and commands stunning views of the River Helmsdale and the surrounding hills. A prettier spot would be hard to find for anyone who has a love of the Scottish Highlands and desire for a total break. Once here, you will find unparalleled natural beauty, peace, solitude and warm hospitality.  

The cottage has just undergone a bit of a make-over with central heating installed over the winter. The price includes heating, bed linen, towels and coal for the sitting room stove. On payment of the balance for the week, guests at the cottage can also apply for a permit to pan for gold on the Suisgill Burn which, unlike the nearby Kildonan Burn, is not normally open to the public.

The cottage sleeps 4 in two bedrooms and a camp bed with additional bed linen is available for a 5th person. The accommodation comprises:

1 Double room
1 Twin room
Bathroom with over-bath shower, lavatory and basin
Cosy sitting room with fuel-burning stove
Well-equipped kitchen
Large dining room
Outbuildings
Fenced rough-grass garden

A freezer, washing machine and ironing facilities are available for your use, as well as satellite television for your entertainment.

Bookings and Enquiries

We are fully booked now during the gold panning season for 2020.  Prices for low season October -December 2019 are £519 inc. VAT for the week.  For these last three months of the year shorter breaks are available at £108 inc. VAT per night (minimum 3 nights.

We are now taking bookings for 2021 with weekly prices inclusive of VAT as follows:

Off season:  15-21st March (short week due to Sunday arrival): £501. 21st March -17th April £519, October, November and December £528.

Gold Panning season: May £561, June, July & August: £579 and September £561.

Arrival and departure days at Balvallioch are Saturdays unless otherwise arranged.  Guests are asked to arrive after 3.30pm and vacate by 10.00am on the day of departure.

A non-refundable deposit of £100 must be made at the time of the reservation with the balance to be paid in full, six weeks prior to the commencement of the holiday.  Payments can be made by cheque or by BACS.  For more information and bookings please fill out our enquiry form below, or email us at lettings@suisgill.co.uk.

 

Getting There, Local Amenities and Things to Do

The cottage is easily accessible, just 10 minutes off the A9 and an hour and a half’s drive from Inverness Airport. Located on the stunning Strath of Kildonan, it benefits from an idyllic and peaceful location but is also an excellent base for exploring Sutherland and Caithness. Balvallioch is popular with gold panners, walkers, cyclists, fishermen, golfers, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts, among many others. The cottage is located just down the road from Baile an Or, the site of the 1869 Kildonan Gold Rush, and Balvallioch guests are also granted unique gold-panning access to Suisgill Burn for the week that they are staying.
